 Looking for a new activity?

Why not join our choir!!

Being a member of our choir is a great social activity and the benefits to your health of singing are well known.

We are now recruiting new members.

If you are an experienced singer, or have never even sung before, why not come along, just listen or join in and have a chat with the members. Our members come from all walks of life and you don’t have to work with the police to sing in the choir.

We practice on a Tuesday each week for two hours and generally give about eight concerts per year to raise funds for local charities. Voice coaching will be provided and we have a measured process to integrate new members into the choir.

You can also check us out on                   where we have a selection of songs from our repertoire.

Alternatively, if you would like to speak to someone, contact Tim: tim_roberts65@hotmail.com or Mark: dimark@live.co.uk

Review of the Year 2025

2025 began with a lot of confidence: we ended 2024 on a high, following a very enjoyable Carol Service in Wimborne Minster, and with several very successful concerts under our collective belts. Our new MD, David Marshall, was settling in extremely well, and we already had a number of concert bookings confirmed for the year.

However, things very nearly turned bad in January when our MD, who is a very experienced skier, had a nasty fall on his annual trip to Switzerland, and was out of action for a couple of weeks. Luckily, our old friend Peter Guntrip was able to step into his shoes and keep the choir going.

Concert bookings were noticeably picking up at the start of 2025, but it was becoming apparent that we were struggling to put together a sufficient number of choristers to put on a good show, and so it was decided to mount a recruitment campaign, in the form of an Open Evening, in June.  The event was well-attended and ultimately resulted in a significant number of new members – some of whom were experienced singers, but many who were trying it for the first time. It is fair to say that this influx of “fresh blood” has made a big difference to the sound of the choir. We are now in a position to put on a concert with 30 or more singers.

Regretfully, the choir has not been able to escape the ravages of Time, and we were all extremely saddened to lose four of our active members during the year – Cyril Bishop, John Griffin, Brian Harding and Dave Ramsay – as well as two retired members – Alan Beech and Howard Patch. The choir was invited to sing at their funerals, and we were able to give them all a fitting send-off.

In November, the choir organised its own concert, to raise funds for Ukrainian charities. Ladies of the local Ukrainian community took part alongside the choir, and gave us some very moving and uplifting singing and dancing. The choir was extremely proud to have raised £5,000.

Our year ended, as it always does, at the Dorset Police Carol Service in Wimborne Minster. Our singing, both before the service and during it, was very well-received, and we received many congratulations from members of the congregation afterwards. We look forward to another successful year in 2026.

Tim Roberts - Chairman Dorset Police Male Voice Choir

We meet every Tuesday during school term-time at 7.30 pm in Bournemouth School for Girls Performing Arts Centre.

 Did you know ?

Singing in a choir isn't just a delightful way to spend time with others who share a love for music; it also offers substantial heart health benefits.

Firstly, engaging in regular singing exercises can significantly improve cardiovascular health. Singing requires deep, controlled breathing, which enhances lung capacity and increases oxygen intake. This, in turn, can lower blood pressure and promote a healthier heart rhythm. Additionally, the physical act of singing acts as a mild aerobic exercise that enhances circulation and strengthens the heart muscle.

Secondly, choir singing has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, contributing to better heart health. Singing releases endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals, and decreases the level of cortisol, the stress hormone. By fostering a sense of relaxation and emotional well-being, singing can mitigate the harmful effects of chronic stress on the cardiovascular system. Moreover, the social bonding experienced in a choir setting can provide emotional support and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for maintaining mental and heart health.

Furthermore, singing in a choir can improve heart rate variability (HRV), an important indicator of cardiovascular health. Higher HRV is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and improved recovery from stress. Studies have found that choir members often synchronise their heartbeats to the rhythm of the music, leading to an increased HRV. This synchronisation and the meditative nature of singing can have a calming effect on the body, promoting overall heart health.

In summary, singing in a choir offers a multifaceted approach to heart health. It combines the physical benefits of aerobic exercise, the emotional advantages of reduced stress and anxiety, and the supportive environment of a social community. Whether you're a seasoned singer or a novice, joining a choir could be a harmonious step toward a healthier heart.
